Santander, the capital of the Autonomous Region of Cantabria, is a modern cosmopolitan city with a rich historical past. Santander is set around a natural port, providing the city with one of the most beautiful bays in the country which does not leave any of the approaching visitors indifferent. From the beautiful Bay of Santander, which bathes the southern area of the city, till the Lighthouse, passing along the majestic Sardinero and La Magdalena Peninsula, Santander city offers one of the best scenarios in the world. How to reach

Santander is located on the north coast of Spain. It is well connected with the most important cities of Spain (Madrid and Barcelona) and it is very close to the city of Bilbao and its important international airport (120Km). There are several ways to reach Santander; in the following you can find a brief outlook of them.

By plane

Santander has its own airport, but given the close distance to Bilbao Airport, depending on the location it might be more advisable as there are more international connections.

Santander International Airport (SDR)

Santander airport is located at 7km from the city centre and it has several regular flights to the most important Spanish cities operated by Iberia and Ryanair, the latter offering a wide range of international connections.

More information is available at AENA From Bilbao, you can reach Santander in around an hour by bus, taxi or car:
  • By bus: As there is no direct public transportation, you should take the public bus from the airport to Bilbao Bus Station (Termibus), and a second bus to Santander. Alsa offers direct services from Bilbao city centre to Santander city centre.
  • By taxi: costs around 150€ one trip. Try to share taxi whenever possible.
  • By car: rental cars are available at Bilbao airport. Just follow the A-8 route and you reach Santander.

By ship

A few metres from the Jardines de Pereda and Promenade which carries that name, in the business centre of the capital, is located Santander shipping terminal. Brittany Ferries offers several journeys per week to Great Britain on the “Val de Loire” Ferry from Plymouth and Portsmouth. There is also the possibility of embarking also in Roscoff and Saint Malo (Brittany), in Cherbourg and Caën (Normandy) and in Cork (Ireland).

By train

Two companies, RENFE and FEVE. offer a very complete service. Both stations are located at the Plaza de las Estaciones, in the centre of Santander, where all bus routes which connect the capital with the rest of the peninsula and Europe are based.
